Sizewell A is located on the Suffolk heritage coast. It ended 40 years of safe, compliant electrical generation on 31 December 2006. The site is currently undergoing decommissioning, with a focus firmly on waste management and hazard reduction. A number of facilities at the site have now been dismantled and cleared.
During the station’s operational lifetime its twin Magnox reactors produced over 110 TWh of electricity. This is enough to continually supply England and Wales for six months. A typical day’s generation saw the station supply more than 10 million kWh of electricity - enough to serve the demand of a third of East Anglia.
ONR's enabling approach was applied to regulatory oversight of this major dismantling project which was completed ahead of schedule, with innovative techniques agreed to speed up conventional demolition methods
ONR has removed almost 100 legacy regulatory requirements from former operating nuclear power stations in a move to boost efficiency, proportionality, and deliver cost and time benefits.
Explosive demolition of turbine hall bases means they can be completely removed in two weeks instead of several months, delivering significant time and money efficiencies.
